Dr. Shahmiri holds degrees in Dental Technology (Bachelor, Postgraduate Diploma, Master by Research), Medical Device Technology (Master by Coursework), and Materials Science and Engineering (Ph.D.).  The latter involved the design, fabrication, characterisation, and testing of zirconia for dental applications.

In 2013, he established his company, EngDental MasterTech Pty. Ltd., which is a dental laboratory for the design and fabrication of crown, bridge and implant restorations.

Since 2021, he has been an Adjunct Associate Lecturer in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, UNSW Sydney.

Over the past decade, he has given individual lectures as well as lecture sequences in dental zirconia and digital dentistry to universities and private institutions in various countries.  In 2026, he was appointed as Director of Research and Education of the Australian Dental Technicians Association (ADTA).

He is the author of 24 refereed journal publications, which have received ~1000 citations and achieved an h-index of 13.

His research interests are focussed on the technical aspects of ceramic biomaterials, particularly zirconia.
